Manfred Mann's Earth Band - Blinded By The Light (1977)

Manfred Mann's Earth Band - Blinded By The Light (1977)
Blinded by the Light is a song written and originally recorded by Bruce Springsteen, although it is mostly known by its 1977 #1 hit version recorded by Manfred Mann's Earth Band. Mann's remake was released in the United Kingdom in August 1976, where it reached No. 6 in the BMRB charts.

Manfred Mann's Earth Band released a version of the song on their album The Roaring Silence. Their version includes the "Chopsticks" melody played on piano near the end of the bridge of the song. The song reached #1 on both Billboard's Hot 100 and on the Canadian RPM chart on 19 February 1977. The Manfred Mann's Earth Band recording of "Blinded by the Light" is Springsteen's only Number 1 single as a songwriter on the Hot 100. In 2002, Danish act Funkstar Deluxe released its disco version of this song. A "jazzified" version can be found on Springsteen's Live in Dublin album, recorded with the Sessions Band.
The song is featured in the films Blow and Running with Scissors.

  1. “Blinded by the Light” was actually originally written and recorded by rock n roll super star Bruce Springsteen. The song first appeared on his 1973 album “Greetings” but failed to find commercial success. It wasn’t until British group Manfred Mann’s Earth Band covered the song and changed up the lyrics a bit that the song became a massive hit. In 1977, Manfred Mann’s Earth Band’s cover reached the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The British rock band certainly peaked too early as they didn’t get to follow up the success of their hit single.

Written by Bruce Springsteen, "Blinded by the Light" is a cut from the Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J. album (Columbia #31903). Neither the single nor the album charted initially (the album became a hit a few years later).

In 1976, Manfred Mann of "Do Wah Diddy Diddy" fame was attempting a comeback with a group now called Manfred Mann's Earth Band. Their Roaring Silence album (Warner Brothers #2965) contained a few songs composed by Bruce Springsteen — "Spirit of the Night" and "Blinded by the Light." Some liberties were taken with the lyrics in this new version, which became a number 1 million-selling smash. Springsteen sang "Cuts loose like a deuce, another runner in the night" and Manfred Mann said, "Revved up like a deuce, another run-ner in the night." That line by Manfred Mann has been misconstrued by many for decades. The song was included in the soundtrack for the 2001 New Line Cinema motion picture Blow, which starred Johnny Depp.

Two different versions of "Spirit of the Night" were recorded and released by Manfred Mann, but neither one became a major hit.
