John Lennon - The 25 Essentials Songs (Playlist)

John Lennon - The 25 Essentials Songs (Playlist)
The pop world has never seen a figure as truly revolutionary as John Lennon. With The Beatles, he transformed rock 'n' roll in the ‘60s, providing a quietly subversive songwriting counterpoint to the band's lighthearted, pop-defining melodies. After the group's 1970 breakup, Lennon changed music again - his growing renown as a political provocateur and peace activist imbuing a string of uncompromising solo releases and experimental albums with his wife, Yoko Ono. Dig into the legacy of this musical visionary here.

Instant Karma! (We All Shine On) by John Lennon & The Plastic Ono Band (1970)
"Instant Karma!" (also titled "Instant Karma! (We All Shine On)") is a song by English rock musician John Lennon, released as a single on Apple Records in February 1970. The lyric focuses on a concept in which the causality of one's actions is immediate rather than borne out over a lifetime. The single was credited to "Lennon/Ono with the Plastic Ono Band", apart from in the US, where the credit was "John Ono Lennon". The song reached the top five in the British and American singles charts, competing with the Beatles' "Let It Be" in the US, where it became the first solo single by a member of the band to sell a million copies.

Woman by John Lennon (1980)
"Woman" is a song written and performed by John Lennon from his 1980 album Double Fantasy. The track was chosen by Lennon to be the second single released from the Double Fantasy album, and it was the first Lennon single issued after his death on 8 December 1980. The B-side of the single is Ono's song "Beautiful Boys".

The single debuted at number 3 in the UK, then moving to number 2 and finally reaching number 1, where it spent two weeks, knocking off the top spot his own re-released "Imagine". In the US the single peaked at number 2 on Billboard Hot 100 (kept out of the top spot by REO Speedwagon's hit "Keep On Loving You" and Blondie's hit "Rapture") while reaching number 1 on the Cashbox Top 100.

John Lennon, The Harlem Community Choir, The Plastic Ono Band & Yoko Ono - Happy Xmas (War Is Over)

John Lennon, The Harlem Community Choir, The Plastic Ono Band & Yoko Ono - Happy Xmas (War Is Over)
"Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" is a Christmas song released in 1971 as a single by John & Yoko/Plastic Ono Band with the Harlem Community Choir. The lyrics, by John Lennon and Yoko Ono, are set to the traditional English ballad "Skewball". It was the seventh single release by Lennon outside his work with the Beatles. The song reached number 4 in the UK, where its release was delayed until November 1972, and has periodically reemerged on the UK Singles Chart, most notably after Lennon's death in December 1980, when it peaked at number 2. Also a protest song against the Vietnam War, "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" has since become a Christmas standard, frequently covered by other artists, appearing on compilation albums of seasonal music, and named in polls as a holiday favourite.
